Gary Brinson, CFA, is president of GP Brinson Investments, a private investment company, and founder of Brinson Partners, Inc., a nationally recognized authority on global investing. He has lectured and contributed to educational and professional investment forums over the past 40 years. Brinson is the co-author of two books on global investing and has authored numerous articles on an array of investment topics including asset allocation and performance attribution. He received his BA in Finance from Seattle University and his MBA from Washington State University.
Brinson is a former executive committee member and past chairman of the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts, now known as CFA Institute. He is currently a member of the Economic Club of Chicago and a former member of the Financial Analysts Journal Advisory Council as well as a former member of the Advisory Council for the CFA Centre for Financial Market Integrity. In 1991, Brinson was named the Outstanding Financial Executive by the Financial Management Association and in 1999 he received the Award for Professional Excellence from the CFA Institute. In April of 2008, Brinson was inducted as a lifelong Member of the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans. Washington State University has honored him with the 2010 Regents' Distinguished Alumnus Award. In 2010 Brinson was presented with an award for Humanitarian Vision by La Rabida's Children's Hospital and recognized by CFA Society Chicago with The Hortense Friedman, CFA, Award for Excellence. In 2012, the Research Foundation of ICFA honored Brinson with his induction into the Leadership Circle by attaching his name to the Director of Research Chair. In early 2013, Brinson was inducted into The Journal of Performance Measurement's "Hall of Fame", which recognizes investment industry professionals who have made significant contributions to the industry. An Honorary Doctorate of Humanities was awarded to Brinson by Seattle University in June of 2014. In June of 2015, the Chicago Council on Science and Technology awarded Brinson the C2ST Award for Advancing the Public Understanding of Science and Technology.
After his retirement in 2000, Brinson, along with his wife and two daughters, created a philanthropic organization, The Brinson Foundation, of which he is chairman. The Foundation funds charitable grants, focusing support in the area of education and scientific research. Brinson also serves on the Board of Directors of America's Foundation for Chess and The Eisenhower Medical Center.
