Frequently Asked Questions: Candidate Membership
Who is eligible for Candidate Membership in CFA Chicago?
Level I, Level II and Level III candidates with active candidate numbers from CFA Institute are eligible for Candidate Membership. You must have CFA program activity within the past 5 years and no CFA Institute sanctions for professional misconduct in order to have an active candidate number.
Level I candidates must be enrolled for an upcoming exam. Level II and Level III candidates do NOT need to be registered for the next exam to be eligible for Candidate Membership. You simply must be a Level II or Level III candidate with an active candidate number.
You are welcome to apply for Candidate Membership. However, please be advised that, in order to receive your Charter, you will be required to become a Regular member of CFA Institute. Therefore, we recommend that you submit your complete CFA Institute and CFA Chicago Regular member application (separate from our Candidate member application) and sponsor forms to CFA Institute around April or May prior to the June exam so you can get your Charter as soon as you pass the exam and fulfill the work requirements (https://www.cfainstitute.org/cfaprogram/gettingstarted/membership/Pages/index.aspx). It can take up to 10 weeks for CFA Institute to process your application, so submitting it in April or May will assure your membership will be processed prior to the onslaught of membership applications received after the Level III results are announced.
If you choose to join only CFA Chicago at this time, please note that you will subsequently need to complete a separate application to join CFA Institute and CFA Chicago as a Regular Member. Candidate Membership does not transfer to Regular Membership with CFA Chicago or CFA Institute.
If you meet the criteria for Student Membership in CFA Chicago (http://www.cfachicago.org/student_requirements.asp), you are advised to apply as a Student Member. Student Member dues and event rates are less than all other membership classes. Please be advised, however, that we restrict the number of Student Members who may register for certain events.
