Dec. 2, 2014 "After the Breach", First Annual Cyber-Risk Conference at DePaul University
The question facing businesses and institutions today is not if they will get hacked, but when? With the list of companies that have been breached growing daily, the needs of the industry are beyond simple solutions like "don't click on links in emails." Headlining the conference is our keynote speaker-renowned cyber-specialist Peter W. Singer.
Time: 8:15 to 4:00 pm

June 19, 2014 Nobel Laureate Scholes: Benchmarks, Tracking-Error, And Investment Decisions
Featuring: Myron Scholes, Frank E. Buck Professor of Finance, Emeritus, Stanford Graduate School of Business, and Nobel Laureate in Economic Sciences
Location: Palmer House Hilton, 17 E. Monroe Street, Chicago, IL 60603

With recent memories of the global financial crisis looming large in investors' minds, an active debate has emerged surrounding benchmarks and investment performance. What is the cost of maintaining a benchmark and a tracking-error constraint? How do managers respond to tracking-error constraints and what are the implications of these decisions on investment choices and market prices? In a volatile global economy with an increasingly vast array of complex investment choices available to even the individual investor, are tracking-error constraints still a meaningful tool for assessing managers? What impact are these having on individual and institutional investor behavior globally? Join us for the fourth annual CME Group Lecture on Global Financial Markets with Myron Scholes, Nobel Laureate and co-originator of the Black-Scholes options pricing model, for a discussion of the effects of benchmarks and tracking-error constraints on investment decisions.

Myron Scholes is the Frank E. Buck Professor of Finance, Emeritus, at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Scholes was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1997 for his new method of determining the value of derivatives. He has served as the chairman of Platinum Grove Asset Management and is on the Dimensional Fund Advisors board of directors, American Century Mutual Fund board of directors and the Cutwater advisory board as well as serving as the Chairman of the Board of Economic Advisors of Stamos Partners. Scholes was the Frank E. Buck Professor of Finance at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business, and other positions that he held include the Edward Eagle Brown Professor of Finance at the University of Chicago, senior research fellow at the Hoover Institution, director of the Center for Research in Security Prices, and professor of finance at MIT's Sloan School of Management. June 11, 2014 Generating Alpha: Predicting Volatility and Corrections
Time: 12:00-1:15 p.m. EDT
Speakers: Michael A. Gayed, CFA, and Charlie Bilello, CMT

Michael A. Gayed, CFA, and Charlie Bilello, CMT, of Pension Partners, LLC co-authored two award-winning papers in 2014 that challenge the efficient market hypothesis by revealing market anomalies that have persisted over time. In separate papers, they focus on the utilities sector and Treasury bonds, providing a systematic way to outperform the market on an absolute and risk-adjusted basis. Importantly, they also show how the unique behavior of utilities and Treasuries can be used to anticipate periods of higher volatility and market corrections. Their work has important implications for both asset allocators and active managers.

You can download both papers from the Social Science Research Network (SSRN): "An Intermarket Approach to Beta Rotation" and "An Intermarket Approach to Tactical Risk Rotation."

Michael A. Gayed, CFA, is Chief Investment Strategist and Charlie Bilello, CMT, is Director of Research at Pension Partners, LLC.

Time: 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm
6:00 - Featured Speaker
Location: Offices of Seyfarth Shaw LLP, 131 South Dearborn, 24th Floor, Chicago, IL

Will the economic forecast be much different than 2013? With five years of crisis, recession and modest recovery, are there hopeful signs? Will 2014 be a breakout year?

Charles Evans, the President and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago will share his perspectives on the current economy and outlook for 2014.

The mission of the Federal Reserve is to foster monetary and financial conditions that support maximum employment and price stability. Since the beginning of 2008, that mission has been put to the test as the country struggled through a very serious financial crisis, a recession and what, so far, has been a most unsatisfying recovery. In response, the Fed has acted decisively to provide extraordinary monetary policy accommodation to help the economy regain its footing.

Please join us for an engaging presentation by Charles Evans.
